Although there’s been a lot of progress in the world since the 1950s, it’s still much harder for women to balance work and family life than it is for men. Men become dads and continue working while women have to take a break to give birth and raise an infant. Even the most easy birth is difficult to recover from quickly enough to get immediately back into the workforce. And if you, like many moms, take some time off to care for your kids, it can be incredibly difficult to get yourself back out there, away from the kids and back to work.
Scheduling is Important
One of the most important things you can do when you’re trying to balance work and family life is to make sure you’ve got a good schedule and know exactly what hours you’re expected to be at work and what hours you need to be at home. You’ve got to make a good effort to keep to the schedule, so that neither your work nor your kids are being neglected. If it looks like there’s not enough time in the day consider getting a sitter or finding daycare, or consider working from home. Working from home isn’t a cure all, it’s still very difficult to balance with taking care of your kids, but it can be easier to schedule for strange hours.
Take Time for you
Between work and home it can be very easy to forget that you need time to yourself to recharge and keep a positive outlook on life. And don’t forget to keep the romance and love in your marriage alive as well. If it seems like a lot to juggle, that’s because it is. Inevitably one or another of the things here is going to suffer, and when that happens you’ve got to reassess and try to get back where you want to be. It is possible to have a career and children, but it will take sacrifice and a real commitment.
