It’s hard to make a living as a writer.  With newspapers losing money hand-over-fist and the direct competition with outsourced foreign workers, well yeah – you know what I mean.

So how do you pay the bills with your writing talents while composing the next great American novel?  Marketing of course!  Things have changed, but the basic premise is the same.  Talented writers have always found work by going commercial.  So how do you get paid to write articles?  Easy, hook up with search marketing and buzz marketing companies.

First things first.  Publish some stuff.  You’ll want to be able to demonstrate you can integrate anchor text links into content.   You’ll want to be familiar with press releases and the creative process for turning boring business drivel into something exciting and new for readers.  Press releases, product reviews, and general business reporting styles will serve you well in landing a paid gig.

Get noticed.  Demonstrate your ability to generate results by listing link by link the published content you currently have live.  Hype and promises just don’t cut it anymore.  No nonsense business men and women will appreciate the open and honest approach to becoming a paid writer for their companies.  Send an email with a catchy title, include concrete examples of what you can do, where you can publish, and list various approaches to business writing that you are proficient with.

Freelance, freelance, freelance.  You don’t want to get stuck in a cubicle, get jobs not ‘a job’.  After all, you are writer for god’s sake — no a worker drone.  Get paid by results – generate results fast – then move on to your real goal.  Keep plugging away at the next great American novel.

Many of us had a Raggedy Ann doll when we were growing up. She had braided hair made of yarn, soft white cloth arms and legs, and she wore a cute little dress with a baby doll face. Most of us can remember it well. We know this. We know all about how it feels to love a little dolly with all our hearts as a child, to want to take care of her and take her everywhere and show her to our friends. We’ve brushed her pretend little hair and practiced all of our nurturing skills on our doll.

But, how can we relate to our children if we don’t even know what they’re thinking? What they’re doing? What they’re learning? What they love about the games they’re playing and how it makes them feel? What is a “ragdoll game” anyway?
